“Lashing rain” today, as the Kiwis would say. So Dick and I
took the No. 2 bus out to Miramar, home of Peter Jackson’s production studio.
We spent time in the Weta Cave, a souvenir and tiny museum. Because we did not
book the tour in advance, we had a couple hours to kill, so we thought we’d go
to the Roxy, an historic movie theatre, for a drink. We were lucky to catch a
ride with a local who didn’t want us to walk in the downpour. People are so nice
here!
Grabbed a cab back to the tour. Photo taking was not
allowed on the tour, unfortunately (my photos are from the Weta Cave). The artifacts and information were fascinating. There
were 7-12’ sculptures, 3-D printers, examples of all the materials used in the
movies to be touched and lifted. Information included the time it takes to make
prosthetics (days placing individual hairs into the artificial skin), only to
have the piece used for a few seconds in filming.
It finally stopped raining when we returned, and we grabbed
a Subway sandwich for dinner. Funny – the places I avoid at home (McDonalds,
Burger King, Subway) are making up more and more of our meals, as we just can’t
afford the restaurants on a regular basis.
