10 January - update on apartment

I guess I never wrote about the apartment we found - did on FB, but not on the blog. We viewed about 6 places - two inside large homes, and four in apartment blocks. The one I mentioned earlier didn't work out, unfortunately. One place in an apt block was tiny. The other three were also compact and with little character, even though one had a great view of the harbour. It was in a place reminded me of a YMCA I stayed at in London years ago when scrimping on my lodgings - metal doors that clanged and sounded like prison quarters.

We went with the first place we saw, one I had been looking at on trademe.co.nz a couple weeks before leaving the States. It is over 100 years old and kept in its Victorian state with wallpaper and tapestry-like drapes, high ceilings. The furniture is a bit drab and scratched, but I can cheer it up with some bright cloth draping and lemon oil polish. It is exactly one kilometre from my workplace: easy to get to work )(all downhill), with a fitness walk to get back home in the late afternoon (about a 30-45% incline!)

It also has a pretty back garden, once the owner gets someone in to mow the grass. We will move in after our tour of the South Island (leave tomorrow). Today is for more organizing - repacking luggage, working out some bank and cellphone issues, etc.

More from Christchurch!
