We got an early start to the airport and arrived in Christchurch around 9am (only a 50 minute flight from Wellington). So far the weather is no warmer. It was mostly cloudy, but no rain. We took the rest of the morning and early afternoon picking up our car, finding our motel (very nice!), getting some brunch, and a quick nap. In the mid afternoon, we found our way to the gondola that goes to the top of a "hill" (mountain for Florida!) to see the landscape. We weren't expecting that much, given the clouds, but we were happily surprised, as the view over Lake Ellesmere and Lyttelton Harbour was spectacular, and the clouds contributed to the beauty. The colours were surreal, and some of the photos appear other worldly. The second one is looking towards the ocean.
The lake is formed in a volcanic crater. We have seen some of the damage from the recent (2011) Christchurch earthquake while driving. Obviously this is a young and active country in more ways than its young population!
We are so happy to have a small kitchen as eating out is too pricey. A great loaf of bakery multigrain bread, ham slices, cheddar, and a bottle of pinot gris make for a perfect dinner!
